The budget ledger

Understand the Cost of Going

A low fare does not make a low-cost holiday. Put the room, the arrival, the ordinary day and the inconvenient extras on the same page.

What the daily model includes

Our allowances describe an independent adult traveler sharing a private room with one other adult. They include a room share, ordinary meals, local transport and a modest amount of sightseeing. They do not describe luxury hotels, dormitory travel or the lowest theoretically possible spend. All figures are editorial planning assumptions dated January 2026, not a survey of current supplier prices. They are expressed in euros for comparison, even where local payment uses another currency.

The daily ranges exclude flights or long-distance rail to the destination, insurance, visas, major shopping, car hire, expensive activities and exceptional event periods. Local lodging taxes and accommodation-specific charges must be checked separately. A solo traveler cannot simply use the shared-room allowance unchanged. Families, travelers needing specialist equipment and anyone choosing higher-comfort transport should rebuild the categories using actual quotes.

Compare like with like

These category bands show how the totals were constructed. Lower endpoints add to the lower daily total, and upper endpoints add to the upper total. They are not claims that every combination will be available on your dates. The lodging component is a per-person share for one night; the other components represent one planning day. Arrival and departure days may require different treatment in your final itinerary.

A three-night Porto example

Separate nights from days instead of multiplying everything by the same number. For one person sharing a room on a three-night, four-calendar-day Porto trip, an illustrative middle-of-range plan could allocate €55 per night to lodging, €34 per day to meals, €8 per day to local transport and €45 to sightseeing across the stay. That produces €165 + €136 + €32 + €45 = €378 before the journey to Porto and other excluded items.

A discretionary 15% reserve on that €378 adds €56.70, giving €434.70. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended minimum or a quoted package. Add your actual return fare, any airport transfer not already included in local transport, insurance and applicable charges. If a transfer is included in one line, do not charge it again in another. Use the schedule to reduce or increase meal allowances on partial days.

Flight comparison: price the final basket

Search results are useful for discovering routes, but the comparison should finish with equivalent conditions. Check the exact airport, cabin baggage dimensions, checked bag allowance, seat-selection needs and payment currency. A late arrival can remove a public transport option or require an extra hotel night. A very early departure can do the same in reverse. Compare the fare plus realistic transfers, not just the number at the top of the results page.

There is no universal cheapest weekday for booking every route. Date flexibility, route competition, season and remaining inventory matter, and prices can change between searches and checkout. Alerts may help you watch a route, but they do not guarantee a future fall. Review the airline’s final price and conditions before payment, including cancellation and change rules. If using an intermediary, understand who handles disruptions and which party holds your booking.

Connections need a separate risk check. A self-transfer on separate tickets may not provide the protections of a through-ticket if the first flight is delayed. Allow for immigration, baggage collection, terminal changes and security where relevant. A saving that depends on an implausibly tight transfer is not equivalent value. Flight advice here is editorial: this site does not search live inventory, sell tickets or provide an automated fare comparison service.

Room value is more than the nightly rate

Compare the total payable amount for the same dates and occupancy. Read the cancellation deadline, deposit terms, local charges and check-in window. A cheaper room far from the places you will visit can add transit fares and reduce usable time. Conversely, a central address can be a poor choice if noise or a steep entrance route makes the stay uncomfortable. Ask specific questions before booking when accessibility or late arrival is important.

Give uncertainty its own line

A reserve is not spare shopping money. It provides room for a missed service, an extra meal, a fare change or a weather-driven indoor activity. Choose a percentage or fixed amount that fits the consequences you could realistically face, and keep access to emergency funds separately. Confirm insurance suitability and exclusions directly with the provider; an editorial budget cannot assess individual cover.

Finish by comparing your full total with the time you gain. A slightly dearer direct route can produce a better short break than a cheaper connection that consumes half a day in each direction. The best-value destination is the one that fits both your money and your available holiday, with assumptions you can explain and commitments you can afford.
